Dr. James (Jim) Greeson

James Greeson James Greeson was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Since 1980, he has been a professor of music at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he teaches music composition and theory, directs the UA Jazz Ensemble, and teaches lessons in guitar and bass. Before earning a doctorate in music composition from the University of Wisconsin, he graduated magna cum laude (MM, BM) from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where he was very active in the jazz program.

His compositions have been performed at notable venues (including Carnegie Hall) throughout the United States. He has also scored over fifteen documentary films broadcast nationwide on PBS. Four of his soundtracks have been nominated for Emmy Awards, and in 2009 his score for The Buffalo Flows received a mid-America regional Emmy Award.

Dr. Greeson is known nationally through his publication of guitar charts for Kendor Music Company of New York, a major publisher of jazz band music. He has performed as a guitarist or bassist with many important figures in the current jazz scene: Neena Freelon, Randy Brecker, Chris Potter, Bruce Barth, Mulgrew Miller, and Bob Dorrough, to name a few. Many of his jazz band scores have been played throughout the region; some are published by the University of Colorado Jazz Press.

Some of Dr. Greeson's students from the University of Arkansas have gone on to become active performers, educators, and writers across the United States; one has even emigrated to China, where he is pursuing his musical career. Quite a few are themselves teaching at colleges and universities in our region.
