Jerry Atkins


Jerry Atkins
Born May 5, 1929 in Texarkana and Jerry Atkins lived on State Line Avenue for the first 16 years of his life, and played saxophone and clarinet with a wartime big band. Jerry died on 10 June, 2010, at age 81.

He left Texarkana after high school and toured the Gulf Coast with with a notable territory bebop band. Upon returning to the Ark-La-Texas area, he formed several bands and began to write articles for several jazz magazines: Down Beat, Metronome, Jazz Journal International, International Association of Jazz Record Collectors, and Coda. He reviewed jazz records for Cadence Jazz magazine for more than five years. Atkins won awards for " Discographies and Discographers", "Texas Tenors' The Discography of Stan Getz"

Atkins created and hosted a jazz radio show "Enjoyment of Jazz" on 100,000 watt NPR radio station for 22 years. He owned a jazz collection of LP's, CD's, 78's, jazz photos, books, arrangements - well over 5,000 items.

In 2009 he was interviewed by international recording artist vocalist Roseanna Vitro live on his home radio station in Texarkana. Atkins remained active in jazz activities until his death in June of 2010.

Jerry Atkins was an ardent supporter of jazz in Arkansas and will be missed by the many jazz enthusiasts who knew him.
