"Sal" Bonner was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended Little Rock Public Schools and Arkansas A M and N College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Bonner started his music career in high school, spinning records at school functions. When he attended college, he developed a serious interest in music that motivated him to move to Detroit, Michigan, later on. Detroit was a music mecca at that time, and opened many avenues for someone of his talent and motivation. He became both a club owner and a national music promoter. The list is long of noted recording artists that he has known and worked with through the years. After returning to Little Rock in the early 1980's, Bonner continued to book some of the largest names in entertainment, including notables such as Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter, Carmen McRae, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Eddie Harris, Mark Murphy, Spanky Wilson, and Count Basie's vocalist Dennis, the Woody Herman Thundering Heard Orchestra, Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, Lou Rawls and Jon Hendricks. In fact, many of Little Rock's largest jazz and blues shows have been spear headed by Sal Bonner. Sal Bonner was inducted into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Arthur L. Porter Lifetime Achievement Award. A quote from Ronald Sitton, on the web site www.southerner.net, succinctly described the evening when Bonner was surprised with the award, and describes the demeaner that defines Sal Bonner. "Prior to introducing headliner Eddie Fisher, Jazz promoter Sal Bonner was presented with the foundation's Arthur L. Porter Lifetime Achievement Award. Obviously taken by surprise, Bonner seemed at a loss for words. Rather than dwell on his accomplishments (too numerous to list here), Bonner introduced this year's living Hall of Fame artist, Eddie Fisher, noting that Fisher once made a guitar out of a tree as a youngster in Little Rock."Sal Bonner is a true jazz icon, and continues to be a mover and shaker in the promotions of large and small jazz performances in Little Rock. His work has been a blessing for our Arkansas jazz and music heritage. This 2004 award and induction into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame acknowledges his extraordinary contributions to jazz in Arkansas.
