Joe Bishop
Born November 27, 1907 in Monticello, Arkansas, Bishop became a jazz composer/arranger of note primarily with the Woody Herman bands of the 30's & 40's. He attended Hendrix College and worked with the bands of Al Katz and Austin Wylie in the late 20's. 1931 saw Bishop's arrangements, along with those of Gordon Jenkins, propel the excellent ensemble sound and semi-swing style of the great Isham Jones band. When Jones' band broke up, saxman Woody Herman used the nucleus to form the "first" Herd. As the chief arranger of this band's blues-dominated style, Bishop arranged (and co-wrote with Herman) Woody's all-time favorite, "Woodchopper's Ball." Other Bishop compositions and arrangements include "Blue Prelude," "Out of Space," "Blue Evening," "Be Not Disencouraged," "Ain't It Just Too Bad," and "Blue Flame," which was used as the Herman band theme in the early 40's.
