Special Events
April 2002
- Saturday, April 13, 2002, Little Rock -- McVinney/Atkins Duo/Trio - at the Coffee Beanery, 17200 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, a half mile west on Chenal Parkway, past Kroger store in Centre shopping Center. This duo provides sophisticated music for any occasion. Their presentation is a varied one: Brazilian bossa novas and sambas, gentle waltzes, gypsy jazz, jazz standards, and romantic ballads, all performed in their own unique style.
Guitarist Byron Atkins observed the time-honored jazz tradition of soaking up the ambiance of Paris where he played in cafes and worked with musicians who played the Django Reinhardt style. He kept his edge on American jazz performing in jazz clubs like Club Vognporten in Copenhagen.
Flutist Barry McVinney is an exciting soloist and performer who is comfortable in a variety of styles from classical to jazz. He toured 35 states while playing in Broadway shows. He holds a Doctorate in Music from the University of Texas in Austin.
Atkins and McVinney have been performing together since 1998. They have played at Starr's Live in the Rivermarket, the Afterthought Monday Jazz series, Vagabonds, Tia Wandas and most recently at Wild Oats Market (formerly Beans and Grains and Things).

The quintet consists of Conrad Wilson on trumpet, Barry McVinney on saxophone, Buck Powell on piano, Joe Vick on bass, and Dave Payette on drums. Small group jazz from the 40's, 50's, and 60's; tunes by people likeΚCharlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, and Clifford Brown. Expect a very enjoyable evening.

- Sunday June 2, 2002 -- Jazz Club of Arkansas Quarterly Session is from 2
to 5 p.m. at Capitol Keyboard Recital Hall 13401 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock. These
quarterly Jazz Club sessions are open to the public and preserve the
tradition of music from the swing era. The Arkansas Jazz Heritage
Foundation has taken on sponsorship of the Sessions. For more information

- Friday, 8 PM June 28, 2002, Fayetteville - Randy Hamm is a renowned alto and soprano saxophone artist who has studied
with David Liebman and Jim Riggs. Formerly a member of the University of
North Texas 1:00 Lab Band, Mr Hamm is the Professor of Saxophone and Jazz
Studies at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.
Randy is an in-demand clinician and jazz woodwind artist.
A founding member of the Thrascher Saxophone Quartet, Mr. Hamm maintains an
active performance schedule and has worked with Mel Torme, Kenny Rogers, Neil
Sedaka, Manhattan Transfer, and has performed with jazz greats Clark Terry,
Randy Brecker, Slide Hampton, Buddy DeFranco, Bob Mintzer, and Pete
Christlieb, among others.

Joe Vick is one of the most talented and in demand musicians in Arkansas.
His bass playing is both inventive and supportive. He plays classical music
as well as jazz and can be heard with the Little Rock Symphony and at jazz
clubs around Little Rock. He has played with numerous top name jazz
musicians.
Atkins, McVinney and Vick have been performing together since 1998. They
have played at Starris Live in the Rivermarket, the Afterthought Monday jazz
series, Vagabonds, Tia Wandas and most recently at Wild Oats Market
(formally Beans).
October 2002
- Monday October 21, 2002 -- Guitarist Mark Elf returns to the Afterthought on Monday, October 21,
2002. Tickets will be $10.
