  • Apr 6 - Stefon Harris - vibraphone and marimba plus piano, bass, drums, saxophone - Walton Arts Center Starr Theater (501) 443-5600 Friday, April 6, 2001, two show-7:30 pm and 9:30 pm Stefon Harris is being hailed as one of the most important vibraphonists in jazz...the heir apparent to Milt Jackson.

  • Apr 28 - The "We Always Swing" Jazz Series presents a once-in-a-lifetime event: "A Night of Jazz & Baseball," a gala fundraiser and auction for the non-profit organization's Endowment Fund that will be held at the Holiday Inn Select/Expo Center, IN COLUMBIA, MISSOURI, SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 2001. The full-night's fun begins at 6:30 p.m. It's a star-studded cast that includes award-winning sportscaster BOB COSTAS, acclaimed documentary filmmaker KEN BURNS and noted author-scholar GERALD EARLY, who was featured in both "Jazz" and "Baseball" along with legendary Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher DON NEWCOMBE, Hall of Fame Inductee ORLANDO CEPEDA, and N.L Batting Champion, Los Angeles Dodger TOMMY DAVIS. Also on the bill: former Chicago Cub and Boston Red Sox infielder CARMEN FANZONE, who is also a trumpeter and happens to be married to Grammy-nominated vocalist SUE RANEY. The evening's activities features anecdotes and commentary by the esteemed group of special guests, a "Ballpark Banquet," a live and silent auction composed largely of jazz and baseball items and jazz renditions of baseball selections by the NATIONAL PASTIMES PRODUCTIONS ALL-STARS, a nine-piece group that includes pianist/musical director JAMES WILLIAMS, bassists RAY DRUMMOND and CHRISTIAN McBRIDE (who will perform "Two Bass Hit"), drummer TONY REEDUS along with a front line to kill for: saxophonists VON FREEMAN and BOBBY WATSON , trumpeter TERELL STAFFORD, and trombonist CONRAD HERWIG. Seat locations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsor Table and non-sponsor 10-tops receive preferential seating. The "We Always Swing" Jazz Series is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit corporation.

  • Jun 6,7 - The Presbybop Jazz Quartet will be performaing/leading worship for United Methodists at the Pine Bluff Convention Center this Wednesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. They will also lead a 2 p.m. jazz worship Thursday, June 7, followed by a workshop. They will lead the worship of the Annual Conference meeting of the United Methodist Churches with some original music, some Dave Brubeck and new takes on scripture! Presbybop is composed of three professional jazz musicians and their pianist, Rev. Bil Carter, now a Presbyterian pastor and preacher. These musicians have performed all over the world with jazz greats like Grover Washington and are regulars in the NYC. Their new CD is called, "Dancing Day," and the first one, "Faith in a New Key".   • Jun 22 - Saxophonist John Gross. 8:00 PM at the University of Arkansas Fine Arts Concert Hall on the Fayetteville campus. Tickets are $8.00 general admission, $6.00 for North Arkansas Jazz Society members , and $5.00 for students.
