Special Events

July 2000
  • Friday, July 7 - (Fayetteville) Trumpeter Mike Metheny will grace the hall with his virtuosity. Trumpet soloist Mike Metheny is a native of Lee's Summit, Missouri. He was a trumpeter in the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington D.C., and in 1976 he became a faculty member at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Mike led his own Boston-based jazz quartet, appearing in numerous club, concert and festival settings across New England and the U.S. Mike is a recipient of the "Outstanding Brass Player" award at the annual Boston Music Awards and has released five solo albums. Older brother to the renowned jazz guitarist, Pat Metheny, Mike is currently a freelance performer and music journalist in the Kansas City area and the editor (since 1994) of Kansas City's Jazz Ambassador Magazine (JAM).   • Friday, July 28 - (Fayetteville) Composer's Showcase
    This very special concert features our regional jazz artists performing all original music in a variety of contexts, from duos to trios and solos to big band arrangements. Hear brand new music in premiere performances. Among the musicians we anticipate showcasing are Jim Greeson, Claudia Burson, Gerald Sloan, Keefe Jackson, Clare Starr, Allan Gibson, and Chris Strom. August 2000
  • Friday, August 11 - (Fayetteville) Jazz vocalist Lisa Henry. She's toured South America with Herbie Hancock. She's been a mainstay on the Kansas City Jazz Scene for over 10 years. [press release]

September 2000
  • Fri-Sun September 15-17 - (Eureka Springs) 16th Annual Eureka Springs Jazz Festival. Featuring vocalist Karrin Allyson on Saturday, kick-off party Friday night featuring Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums featuring Miss Carmen Getit. Special show in the City Auditorium Saturday at 2pm. October 2000
  • Sun October 1 - (Fayetteville) The annual POTLUCK JAM will take place at the North 40 in Fayetteville on October 1 (Sunday) from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM. This event is free to NAJS members and participating musicians. It is a great evening of music and food. Members are asked to bring a potluck dish and jazz musicians are invited to bring their instruments. Musicians who perform recieve a small financial consideration , plenty of great food, plus a free 1 year membership to the NAJS. Call me for more info. Call Robert Ginsburg (501) 521-1255.
