PRESS CONTACT: Cece Rich, Capitol Keyboard, 228-9999

LITTLE ROCK - James Leary, Count Basie Orchestra leader, former Arkansan, and well known bassist, will be in Little Rock on Monday October 19 for several performances, including Monday Jazz at the Afterthought, 2721 Kavanaugh, in Little Rock, (501) 663-1196. Leary is a former student of the late Art Porter, Sr., and a graduate of UAPB. The Monday and Tuesday Jazz Projects are sponsored by the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation, The Afterthought, and Capitol Keyboard as well as private contributors.

Monday October 19 will be his first performance of the week, at Monday Jazz at the Afterthought, where he'll be featured with pianist Tom Cox, and drummer Dave Rogers.

On Tuesday and Wednesday October 20 and 21, there will be special afternoon events at Woodland Hills, Woodland Heights, and Andover Place retirement centers. The JAMES LEARY TRIO will perform there, taking the music of 9th Street to the people that were there. Also, Andover Place is where retired bassist Carwin Pleasant lives, and many remember Carwin Pleasant from the Art Porter days, and from his group Nostalgia.

On Tuesday October 20, Leary will conduct a jazz clinic for high school and college jazz musicians at the Tuesday Jazz Project at Capitol Keyboard from 7 to 9 p.m.

Friday, October 23, 8 p.m. there will be a 9TH STREET REVISITED concert at MOSAIC TEMPLARS featuring Leary and vocalist IRENE CRUTCHFIELD. Other musicians appearing include saxophonist John Bush, Dave Rogers on drums, and pianist Tom Cox.

On Monday October 26, Leary will once again perform at Monday Jazz Project at the AfterThought at 8 p.m., leading the monthly Jam Night with guitarist Steve Struthers and Dave Rogers. That evening, the first set will feature special performances by the Tuesday Jazz Project at Capitol Keyboard students.

The Afterthought, still the "home of jazz in Central Arkansas", is located at 2721 Kavanaugh, Little Rock, AR, phone (501) 663-1196, or go to afterthoughtbar.com. Tickets are $12 at the door. For more info, contact Capitol Keyboard at (501) 228-9999.
