Press Release - January 27, 2004

Walter Henderson Chicago Flugelhornist/Vocalist and Arkansas Native Walter Henderson

Benefit for Arkansas Jazz History, Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame

February 2, 2004, 8 p.m.

Performance will be at Monday Jazz at the Afterthought, 2721 Kavanaugh, Little Rock Monday February 2, 2004, 8 p.m., $10 donation, (501) 663-1196, with Buck Powell-piano, Joe Vick-bass, and Dave Rogers-drums.

So much of what Walter Henderson has been about in the last year has been Arkansas Jazz History. Being a native of Little Rock, he has participated in a stellar performance with saxophonist (and native Arkansan) John Stubblefield in tribute to Robert Palmer, which took place April 11, 2003 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The following Monday April 14,2003, he performed at the AfterThought, celebrating a joyous return to the Monday Night Jazz revival tradition and has subsequently performed numerous other dates at that venue.

He has been passing back and forth from Chicago, Illinois, the home of his children, not only honoring his family's history here in Little Rock by restoring the old family home on State Street but also exploring the oral histories of Afro-American musicians who lived and performed along Little Rock's Ninth Street before and during his lifetime. He returns to the Afterthought Monday night to perform with Buck Powell on piano, Joe Vick on bass, Dave Rogers at the drums, and other special guests. The date is a benefit for the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame which will happen May 2004, at the Old State House Museum in conjunction with the Send You Back to Arkansas exhibit. Admission to Monday's event is $10, seating at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. at the AfterThought (501) 663-1196.

Henderson's most recent involvement with Bobby Irving, pianist of the Miles Davis 80's band, has brought a tour to Montreux Jazz Festival in Tokyo, Japan in 2000, a recording release and tour with Val Gray Ward (Portrait of Langston Hughes) in 2003. Other jobs have been with prominent Chicago group Phase Four. Walter has performed with Buddy Guy, Buddy Ace, Temptations (lead by Ali Woodson), Art Porter, Jr., Lin Halliday, and many others.

Walter currently has a CD entitled "Schema" and is featured on Lee Tomboulian's Circo CD "North/South Convergence", both CDs will be available at Walter's performance.
