Show starts at 8 p.m., $5 cover. The Real Thing is features Dan Sieckman, guitar; Joe Vick, upright bass; and Jay Payette, drums. Music is in the style known as Bebop, or Modern, or Mainstream Jazz, which first appeared in the early 1940's, created by such innovators as Charlie Parker ("Bird"), and John Birkes "Dizzy" Gillespie. Dan Sieckman lives in Alexander, AR, in the Little Rock area. Dan received a Bachelor of Music degree from Arizona State University in 1980, with a focus on jazz performance. He has studied with pianists Glen Furgeson, Dan Hearle, and Chuck Mahronic, as well as guitarists Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, and Barney Kessel. He played extensively in the Phoenix area during the late seventies and early eighties in a variety of jazz and commercial settings. After a 12-year absence from the music business, Sieckman began playing again in Little Rock in 1997, and now focuses completely on traditional jazz and bebop in a trio setting. Little Rock area bassist Joe Vick will be playing this date for regular bassist Byron Yancey. Joe is the regular house bassist for the Monday Jazz Project series. He also teaches strings in the Pulaski County Special School District, bass instruction at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and is a principle bassist with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Jay Payette was born and raised in the Chicago area. He has studied drums and percussion since age 9, and received a bachelor of Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1978. He played regularly with the Stanley Paul Orchestra in Chicago-area hotels, restaurants and landmark Jazz clubs through the 1980's. As drummer for the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble at College of DuPage, (in Glen Ellyn, IL, a western suburb of Chicago) through the 1990's, he worked with many famous artists such as Louie Bellson, Ed Shaughnessy, Clark Terry, Joe Williams, Terry Gibbs, Michael Brecker, and New York saxophonist Scott Hamilton. Payette has lived in Hot Springs, AR since 1999, and continues to perform throughout the state. The first concept of The Real Thing came in 2001, when Payette formed a quintet to play for the Hot Springs Jazz Festival. This quintet consisted of trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, and focused on the Hard-Bop sub-category of Bebop. After that successful engagement, Bryan Sink, owner of Sink's Kitchen in Hot Springs, AR, asked Payette to form a group to play at the restaurant. While at Sink's, the trio coalesced into its present form, and regularly plays at restaurants and art galleries in Hot Springs.
