others. His compact discs include
Who IS Herman Green? His Music and Inspiration: Family & Friends. Herman is currently Head of Jazz Studies at Lemoyne-Owen College in Memphis.
Herman Green and the Memphis Blues and Jazz Quartet
Herman Green is one of the great originators of jazz and blues. He has probably
stepped foward into more unexplored areas of music than any other musician. Herman
was playing on Beale Street in 1953 when his friend, then unknown, Rufus Thomas
asked him to join him for a session at Sun Records. From this session came the song,
"Bearcat", which many believe to be the first Rock n' Roll recording.
Another friend, then unknown, B. B. King asked Herman to help him put a band
together. Herman was there when B. B. first started playing paid performances.
Through the years, you could find Herman at Sun Records, Sam Phillips
Recording Service, and Stax. Many of the musicians that work with Herman in Memphis do not even realize that he also was one of the founders of the new sounds of jazz and one of the first experimenters with jazz musicians in San Francisco and New York.
Music critics say that you can not separate jazz and blues, but it seems like everybody wants to put them in separate categories. Herman does not even try, he just plays them both, sometimes both at the same time.
