Monday Jazz Project presents another native jazzer by way of Kansas City John Wier-trumpet, with Joe Vick-bass, Buck Powell-piano, and Daver Rogers-drums Monday June 9, 2003, 8 p.m., $5 cover where? John Wier is from North Little Rock. He received a bachelors degree in Music Education from Henderson State University and his Masters in trumpet from the University of Missourri-Kansas City where he studied trumpet under Dr. Keith Benjamin. While at Henderson State University Wier studied jazz with Dr. Rick Dimond and Dr. Jim Buckner. He played in the Jazz Ensemble "Nu Fusion" and a small fusion ensemble "5A:. During his studies in Kansas City he played under the instruction of Bobby Watson and Hal Melia. Wier has also studied with Larry McWilliams, professor of trumpet and jazz studies at Ball State University.

In Kansas City, Wier played regularly at the Musicians Foundation, the Blue Room, the Grand Emporium, Blaney's, Harling's, and BB's Lawnside Bar-B-Q. John has also had solo performances with the Little Rock Wind Symphony and the Henderson State Concert Band. His influences include Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan.
