Flugelhornist Returns to Monday Jazz Roots.
Walter Henderson featured April 14 Monday Jazz Project at the Afterthought

The Monday Jazz Project at the Afterthought presents jazz fluegelhornist / vocalist Walter Henderson on Monday April 14, 2003, 8 pm, cover charge. Henderson will be joined by pianist Buck Powell, bassist Joe Vick, and drummer Dave Rogers. Henderson was the first featured player of the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation sponsored Monday Jazz series at the Oyster Bar in 1989. Monday Jazz returned to the Afterthought in 1994 and now so has Henderson.

Walter Henderson, trumpeter, fluegelhornist, puccolist and vocalist, is originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, and has developed his many musical skills from artists such as John Stubblefield, James Leary, York Wilborn, Donald E. Kramer, Pharoah Sanders, Art Porter and Sylvia M. Clay.

He served with the 60th U.S. Army Band. He studied music at Little Rock University and at Governors State University, where he gained popularity with the GSU Jazz Sextet. The group toured Europe, the Far East, and was twice winner of the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival.

Most notably, he is a 1987 Musicfest USA National Finals Winner in Chicago. He has performed for the Richard “Muhal” Abrams Big Band, was leader of the Chicago band “Inner Drive” and also led “The Recontours”. He has been an active member of the “Rockin’ Robin’s Rhythm Kings”, and has performed with Leslie Gore, Little Anthony, Frankie Avalon, Dick Clark, Lou Christie, Bobby Lewis, and Del Shannon. Upon different occasions, he has appeared with Redd Foxx, Richard Boone, The Four Tops, Captain Jack McDuff, Buddy Guy, Ken Booth, and Lord Lara. He was a principal in the Little Rock Brazilian Jazz-Pop band, Circo Verde.

Currently, Henderson resides in Chicago where he has performs with musicians such as rhythm and blues man Tyrone Davis. He returns for visits to Arkansas when his schedule permits.

Apr 28 - Monday Jazz Project Jam Session with House Trio featuring Gene Rush on piano, Joe Vick on bass, and Dave Rogers at the drums. Jam players signup starting at 7:45 p.m. in After thought Foyer, 8 PM, $5 cover, $1 Jammers.

May 5 - Rodney Block, trumpet with Buck Powell-piano, Joe Vick-bass, and Dave Rogers-drums, 8 p.m., $5 cover.

May 12 - Chuck Dodson Trio. with Chuck Dodson-piano, Joe Vick-bass, and Dave Rogers-drums, 8 p.m., $5 cover.
