FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 1, 2001

Louis Jordan Fifth Annual Louis Jordan Tribute set to be largest ever Jordan's widow, Trout Fishing in America, Greasy Greens, Bob Boyd Sounds, more to join yearly July 7-8 celebration of Arkansas history and heritage.

The Louis Jordan Tribute, which began as a one-time, one-day ad hoc concert staged in 1997 and has grown into an annual two-day event, will be larger than ever this year, according to Louis Jordan Tribute founder Stephen Koch. The 5th annual Louis Jordan Tribute is set for July 7-8, 2001, at Vino's, 7th and Chester streets in downtown Little Rock. Louis Jordan (1908-1975), born July 8, 1908, in Brinkley, Arkansas, sold millions of records in the 1940s, and is considered to be one of the major influences on American popular music, including rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll and even calypso, rap and music video. Such music masters as B.B. King, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and Chuck Berry cite Jordan as important in helping create their own musical directions, with James Brown simply saying, "He was everything!"

Scheduled to appear at the 2001 Louis Jordan Tribute are Trout Fishing in America, The Greasy Greens, I. J. Routen, Rich Cosgrove, Jim Mize & The Blinds, Magic Cropdusters, Bug Tussle, Ashtray Babyhead, The Bob Boyd Sounds, Jimmy Powell & the Convertibles, Beatrice, Eugene Porter of Arkansas Baptist College, Nessie with Henry Lee and many more. Additionally, vintage film clips of Louis Jordan from the 1940s - early examples of "music video" - will be screened and a silent art auction will be held.

Saturday, July 7, is electric night; Sunday, July 8 - Jordan's birthday - is acoustic, non-smoking night. Doors open at 6 p.m at Vino's Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Although both nights are all ages shows, children 12 and under are free Sunday. A panel discussion, moderated by Little Rock author Bill Jones, is also planned for July 8, to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Darragh Center of the Main Library, 100 Rock St. in the River Market in downtown Little Rock. Jordan's widow, Martha Jordan of Las Vegas, who was present at the 1998 Tribute and for Jordan's 1998 induction into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame in Pine Bluff, is slated to be on the panel, as is Al Bell, Stax Records and Alpine Records executive and also a Brinkley native. Admission to the panel discussion is free; admission to the concert/conference at Vino's is $6.

In addition to raising awareness of Jordan's incredible musical legacy, the Louis Jordan Tribute raises funds for a memorial to Jordan to be placed in Brinkley (The Louis Jordan Memorial Fund, c/o Bank of Brinkley, Brinkley, AR 72072) in concert with the Louisiana Purchase State Park visitors center and museum, slated to open in the old Brinkley Union Pacific train depot in 2003.

The annual Louis Jordan Tribute is also a celebration of Arkansas music in general, with performers from all different types of genres doing their versions of Jordan's classic songs, and scholars and fans alike expounding on what made Louis Jordan and his music unique. The Louis Jordan Tribute has been recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland - which inducted Jordan into the Hall of Fame in 1987 and honored Jordan with his own week-long conference in 1999 - the Library of Congress, U.S. Rep. Vic Snyder, Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and Arkansas musicians such as Lucinda Williams and Levon Helm.

The 5th Annual Louis Jordan Tribute is presented by the Arkansas Artists Consortium and the Hookie Cookie Fraternal Terpsichorean Society, in partnership with The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies (A department of the Central Arkansas Library System), the Delta Cultural Center in Helena and the Arkansas music radio program/field recordings project "Arkansongs."
