Press Release
July 3, 1999

Lee and Betty Tomboulian at the AfterThought July 12, 1999

Lee and Betty Tomboulian will be returning to Monday Jazz at the AfterThought on July 12th at 8pm. They have been performing in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex since moving to Denton, Texas, in 1993.

Lee earned a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas in 1997, where he was the featured pianist on Lab 97, a CD recorded by the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band, and Fifty Years of Jazz, a compilation CD produced by the Jazz Studies area. Lee's composition B.B. is on Lab 97. Since graduating, he's been adjunct faculty at North Central Texas College, University of Dallas at Irving, and Cedar Valley Community College.

They've been performing Lee's compositions in the Metroplex with Circo, a 6-piece group of professionals, mostly UNT alumni. Always with diverse musical interests, the two have been members of The Denton Bach Choir for two years. The choir has 3 concerts a year, and recently performed the Mass in B Minor by JS Bach and Mendelssohn's Elijah, among others.

Lee has been working regularly in Dallas with Tony Hakim at the Crescent Court, John Adams at the Beau Nash, Rodney Booth at Terelli's, as well as solo at wedding receptions and parties. Lee occasionally involves himself with pet projects like Happy Accident, with Jefferey Barnes (Brave Combo saxophonist), and the award-winning Denton Institute of Phrenology Marching Band, where he plays accordion and Betty plays melodica. The marching band features such Tomboulian favorites as Louie Louie, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, and Jump, as well as all-time hits like Stars and Stripes Forever. They've taken the "Best of the Parade two out of the four years they've participated in the Denton Fourth of July Parade.

They are presently in production on a CD of Lee's compositions along with some Brazilian and Uruguayan music with Circo, scheduled to be released around Christmas this year.

Famed LR rhythm section Joe Vick, bass, and Dave Rogers, drums, will accompany the Tomboulians on the 12th. Last year when the Tomboulians returned to LR for a Monday Jazz Performance, there was standing room only at the AfterThought, Kavanaugh and Beechwood.
