from Robert Ginsburg, North Arkansas Jazz Society
The North Arkansas Jazz Society, University of Arkansas Music Department,
and KUAF Radio are proud to announce the first Jazz Summer Concert Series.
The series will include five concert events, all taking place in the
University of Arkansas Fine Arts Concert Hall in Fayetteville. Events are
scheduled on five Fridays to run from June through August, showcasing our
finest local and regional talent with guest artists appearing at each
performance.
Ticket are $8 general admission and $6 for NAJS members. Purchase tickets now
at Uncle Sam's Safari Outfitters in Evelyn Hills Shopping Center and at
Enigma American Craft Gallery at 15 North Block, downtown Fayetteville, or by
phone (charged to your credit card) by calling 501-521-7779.
The first event is coming up!!!!
Friday, June 11, 1999 at 8:00 pm
The opening event for the concert series will also be a memorial concert
honoring long-time NAJS supporter Bert Stafford. Proceeds from this event
will go to Washington Regional Medical Center's Hospice Program.
The performers are among the area's finest; pianist Claudia Burson, James
Greeson on bass, and Darren Novotny on drums. This trio represents the core
group on which the entire series will build. Special guests will include
former television news anchor and vocalist Carolyn Long-Brewer. You can also
expect some of our fine instrumental soloist to show up for this event,
promising a lively, jam session close to the evening.
Friday, June 25, 1999 at 8:00 pm
The second concert is the Jazz Composer's Showcase. This will be a rare
opportunity to hear all original compositions by our regional stars,
including Al Gibson, John Behling, Keefe Jackson, James Greeson, and Claudia
Burson.
Friday, July 9, 1999 at 8:00 pm
The third concert showcases an Arkansas musical legend, Charles Thomas.
Charles was recently the featured guest on Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz"
radio show on NPR.
Joining Charles will be his working trio out of Little Rock, Buck Powell on
bass and Brian Brown on drums. We can once again look forward to our area
soloists sitting in with the maestro.
Friday, July 30, 1999 at 8:00 pm
Kansas City vocalist Carol Comer will be the featured artist for this late
July concert. She will be joined by our all-star house rhythm section,
Claudia Burson, James Greeson (playing guitar on this date), Mike Johnson on
bass and Steve Wilkes on drums.
Friday, August 20, 1999 at 8:00 pm
The final concert will be a high energy blowing session with guest
artist/saxophonist Will Campbell leading the pack.
Email me if you have any questions. I will be sending you the rest of the
schedule very soon.
Keep swingin'.....Robert Ginsburg
