(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - call 372-6563 or 390-9412, or http://members.tripod.com/~memphisfringe/arkansongs.html or email skoch@arkansas.net for more information or for interviews.)

LITTLE ROCK -- A new radio program exploring Arkansas' musical heritage will debut Dec. 20 on KABF 88.3 FM. "ARKANSONGS" will air on alternate Sundays from 8 to 10 p.m.

From the folk and bluegrass of the Ozarks to the Delta blues to a Little Rock and roll, Arkansas has always had a rich and influential musical tradition as varied as its land and its people -- but much of it has been forgotten or ignored. ARKANSONGS hopes to change that.

Better-known Arkansas artists like Al Green, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Black Oak Arkansas and Charlie Rich will be profiled -- as well as some you might not have heard of before. But ARKANSONGS isn't just about blowing the dust off of old records. They'll also play, interview and feature in-studio music of local artists who are doing some equally amazing things themselves. Mulehead, Magic Cropdusters, Barry Poynter and many more are part of the talented, but unheralded, statewide scene.

From rock to bop, to R&B to country, Arkansas musicians have blazed the trails that the rest of the world follows.

This new show will take listeners back to the state's -- and America's -- musical roots, where the work of such Arkansawyers as Texarkana-born Scott Joplin, Brinkley's Louis Jordan, Jimmy Driftwood of Timbo and Delta bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson taught the world how to rock.

Trout Fishing In America, Ho-hum, Ashtray Babyhead, Lucinda Williams and other Arkansawyers are pointing the way to the future. Hear it all on ARKANSONGS, beginning Sunday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. on KABF 88.3 FM.

Hosting the show are Stephen Koch and Keith Merckx. Both are communications graduates of Arkansas State University, musicians and passionate about Arkansas music. Koch is a newspaper editor, writer and author of Louis Jordan's entry in the University of Arkansas Press's forthcoming Arkansas Biography and organizer of an annual fund-raising tribute to Jordan. Merckx is a reporter and writer based in Little Rock.
