Either/Orchestra
April 10 at JR's Ballroom, Fayetteville

EITHER/ORCHESTRA TO PLAY IN FAYETTEVILLE FOR FIRST TOUR SINCE 1995

The North Arkansas Jazz Society and JR's Ballroom will present the Either Orchestra in Concert on Friday, April 10, 1998 at JR's Ballroom on Dickson Street. Show time is 9:00 pm and tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door (available at the Sound Warehouse).

The event is part of a tour which will be the group's first since 1995, with six talented new members and much new material. The first batch of new music includes originals, along with a suite of Ethiopian pop tunes from the '70s, and a torch song written by teenage waif fatale Fiona Apple, arranged to feature ten-year E/O veteran Charlie Kohlhase.

The Either/Orchestra, founded in 1985 by composer/saxophonist Russ Gershon, is one of the large jazz ensembles which has redefined what it means to be a "big-band." Drawing on the lineage of Ellington to Mingus with a dash of Sun Ra and Carla Bley, and healthy regard for pop music from the thirties through today, this group has anticipated a number of movements in modern music. In its wide-ranging vision of jazz, the E/O was swinging left from the archival approach to the big band repertory and revisiting 70's Miles by the mid '80s, was ahead of the "lounge" trend as early as 1985, and was playing Burt Bacharach in 1992, long before he became the hot rediscovery of 1997. A mixture of pastel voicings in the hard-bop nonet tradition with the saturated colors of free jazz has created a unique palette which the E/Os writers have displayed on a series of six CDs released on Gershon's Accurate Records label.

With a national if select audience, the Either/Orchestra has been recognized by the Down Beat International Critics poll, which has voted it Big-Band Talent Deserving Wider Recognition for the past six years. In addition, Gershon was nominated for a Grammy in 1992 for an arrangement recorded by the Either/Orchestra, and the group has won four Boston Music Awards and readers polls in its home town.

Returning veteran members include Gershon and Charlie Kohlhase in the saxophone section, charter trumpeter Tom Halter, five year man Dan Fox on trombone. New members are Colin Fisher (originally from Seattle) on trumpet, Miguel Zenon (Puerto Rico) on alto sax, Dan Kauffman (Chicago) on piano, Atemu Aton (Chicago) on bass, Rick McLaughlin (Des Moines) on bass and Harvey Wihrt (Surinam) on drums.
