Motion Poets
April 20 at The AfterThought, Little Rock

Little Rock, Arkansas - - - The Motion Poets, a jazz sextet performing original tunes, will perform at the Monday Jazz Project at the AfterThought, 2721 Kavanaugh, Little Rock, on Monday April 20, 1998. The Monday Jazz Project is sponsored by the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation (AJHF), the AfterThought, and the Legacy Hotel. Tickets are $9 at the door or in advance. The Motion Poets originated in coffee houses of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, a locale long known for music. Bob Protzman of the St. Paul Pioneer Press writes, "Their impressive CD argues well for the future of jazz." They perform original tunes with an creative energy and a tonal style that is uniquely their own.

The Motion Poets have played national jazz spots such as Detroit's Baker's Keyboard Lounge and have been featured on Leigh Kammon's NPR show, The Jazz Image. Since the Fall of 1995, the Motion Poets tours have also included appearances at The Drum Room (Kansas City), The Bop Shop (Chicago), The Jazz Kitchen (Indianapolis, Arnold's (Cincinnati) and Rasselas (San Francisco).

In age, the group members are in their twenties. The group includes Mark Sutton (trumpet, flugelhorn), Doug Little (alto saxophone, flute), Mark Miller (trombone), Nate Shaw (piano), Chris Bates (bass), and J. T. Bates (drums). They hale from Minnesota, Wisconsin, California and Massachusetts, and are accomplished in both jazz and classical arenas. Formed in 1993 and formerly known as Little Big Band, Motion Poets have developed a range of songs from fierce burners to pensive ballads. From their repertoire of originals, ten have found their way onto their debut CD, "Truth and Consequence" on IGMOD Records.

The Motion Poets will perform at 8 p.m. on Monday April 20 at The AfterThought at 2721 Kavanaugh in Little Rock.
