Jazz in the Park!

2nd Annual College Jazz Fest

It's April, and that means it's time to fill the warm spring air with cool jazz sounds. On Saturday, April 18 The Hot Springs Jazz Society will host The 2nd Annual College Jazz Festival on Central Avenue, in historic downtown. Once again, The Arlington Lawn will be filled with the swinging rhythms of the states finest college and high school jazz ensembles. From Afro-Cuban classics by Dizzy Gillispie to swinging big band hits by Duke Ellington and modern arrangements by Manard Fergson, jazz fans can expect to hear it all at this years festival.

"Last years College Jazz Fest was such a success," explained Festival coordinator Ron Petti, "so we've expanded. This year's program includes some very well respected High School bands as well Harding University."

With beautiful Hot Springs Mountain as a back drop, four high school bands, five university jazz bands and the 17 piece United States Navy Jazz Band 'SternwheelDrive' are scheduled to perform.

High school bands from North Little Rock, Jonesboro, Sheridan and Arkadelphia will play 30 minute sets from 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Following a short break, 'SternwheelDrive' of the United States Navy will take the stage from 1:30-2:30. This 17 piece, Memphis based, big band performs under the direction of Musician 1st Class Brad Stillion.

Five high-energy college jazz bands will perform on the Arlington Lawn between 2:30 and 6:45. Two groups from Arkansas State University, 'Jazz Lab Unit' and 'Tribe' will perform first, followed by The Harding University Jazz Band, and Ouachita Jazz Band. The eclectic state favorite, Henderson State University Jazz Band will perform at 6 p.m.

The music will move across the street and into the lobby of the Arlington Hotel at 7 p.m. Last year The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Jazz Ensemble was one of the festival highlights. Under the direction of Odie E. Burris, Jr, the UAPB Jazz Ensemble plays straight ahead jazz and that intoxicating Basie style swing.

From 3:30 - 4:30. The United States Navy Jazz Band is also offering 3 jazz clinics for rhythm, reeds and brass as part of this year's College Jazz Festival. The clinic will be held in the Arlington Hotel. All students are welcome.

The 1998 College Jazz Festival is presented by the Hot Springs Jazz Society, a non-profit organization.
