Monday Jazz Project at the AfterThought series features the John Glover Group with John Glover at the drums, Joe Vick on bass, Steve Struthers on guitar, Monday February 2, 1998, 8 p.m., tickets $4. Leader John Glover started playing in local Rock and Roll bands in 1967, playing is first jazz gigs in 1969/70 with the late pianist/vibist Bob Steele. Steele was a candidate for the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame in 1996 and returns to this year's ballot. From 1974 to 1977 Glover worked with local R&B/Jazz musicians Thomas East, William Stuckey, and Albert Smith. In 1978 he played in Blue John featuring vocalist Cassandra Wilson.
Starting in 1978 for six years he co-lead the Glover Brothers Band with keyboardist Roy Glover. The band was on of Little Rock's first Fusion/Jazz/Latin groups featuring the compositions of Weather Report, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington, and Roy Glover. The band appeared twice on AETN/PBS On Stage series.
In 1979/80 Glover was house drummer at the AfterThought. In 1981 co-founded the Conch Rhythm ensemble. As percussionist and/or drummer Glover has performed with the Art Porter Trio, the R&B show band MVP, Lee Tomboulin's Circo Verde, the Steve Struthers Band, Joe Perrea's Calypso Band, and with various artists including pianists John Puckett and Charles Thomas. He has be a drum and percussion instructor at Boyd Music in Little Rock since 1977. Glover's last performance on the Monday Jazz Project was in August '97 with the Glover, Black, Hudelson, and Dickson Quartet.
