John Adams JOHN ADAMS QUARTET AT THE AFTERTHOUGHT

Little Rock jazz followers are in for a Texas jazz treat: The John Adams Quartet will play at the AfterThought on Kavanaugh Boulevard on Monday, March 16, 1998, at 8 PM. The quartet includes John Adams on bass, Ed Soph on drums, Joe LoCascio on piano, and Dennis Dotson on trumpet.

An outstanding bass player, John Adams is another representative of the well-known music program at University of North Texas (at Denton), where good jazz abounds. Accomplished on the electric and acoustic bass, he plays in a wide variety of settings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. John is the jazz bass professor at the UNT and holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Jazz Studies from that school.

John has toured with the Woody Herman Band, Sal Nistico and Zoot Sims, and while studying at UNT, with the One O'Clock Lab Band. He has backed vocalists Mel Torme and Rosemary Clooney, and jazz stars such as Randy Brecker, Carl Fontana, Chet Baker, Clark Terry, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Dave Liebman and others. His debut solo recording, "Jump Shot," features Marvin Stamm, Warren Bernhardt, Ed Soph and others.

John Adams - Jump Shot Ed Soph is a native of Houston, and studied classical percussion as well as jamming with local jazz greats Arnett Cobb, Jimmy Ford, and Don Wilkerson. Ed moved on to New York where he toured and recorded with jazz legends such as Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Bill Evans, Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman, Slide Hampton, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, and many others. Since returning to Texas in 1987, Ed Soph serves as head of the jazz percussion department at the University of North Texas. [AMG]

Joe LoCascio is a prolific composer, with eight albums as jazz leader to his name. He has performed with Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Ernie Watts, George Mraz, and Arnett Cobb. He has released two cds, "Silent Motion" and "A Charmed Life." [AMG]

Dennis Dotson was trumpet soloist with the Woody Herman Orchestra for three years,after performing in Las Vegas for five years. He has performed with Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson and Buddy Rich. He is also a clinician/guest soloist for more than 20 colleges and universities. [AMG]
