Joe Cripps of Little Rock passed away on March 24, 2013. He was born in Northwest Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas, graduating wtih degrees in Music Education and String Bass. He was Orchestra teacher for Booker Arts Magnet elementary school in the Little Rock Arkansas School District. Primarily a bassist, he played professionally with the Woody Herman Big band, The Tommy Dorsey big band, The Les Elgart Big Band, Herb Ellis, numerous touring Broadway musicals, the New York Voices, as well as local Little Rock groups.
Most recently, he played with the Ted Ludwig Trio at the Capitol Hotel and at Vieux Caree restaurant. He had extensive orchestral experience having played with the North Arkansas Symphony, the Tulsa Philharmonic, the Ft Smith Symphony, and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra as a bassist. He toured Europe in 1987 with a bluegrass band named Wildfire. For 10 years he was the bassist with the Art Porter Trio. He loved the opportunity to play tuba with the Happy Tymes jazz band.
